Letterman, who joined CBS in 1993 and hosted the Late Show for 22 years, earning over 50 Emmy nominations, has seen the network undergo significant changes. He believes the network is losing its way, stating, "CBS News is in shambles. It's gone."
In a conversation with his longtime producers, Barbara Gaines and Mary Barclay, Letterman expressed his concern about the dwindling platforms for political satire on television. He highlighted the impact of Jimmy Kimmel, who, according to Letterman, "single-handedly brought Disney and other network owners to their knees by exposing their foolishness."

The controversy deepened in July 2025 when Paramount, CBS's parent company, settled a $16 million lawsuit with President Trump over a misleading edit in a 60 Minutes segment featuring Kamala Harris.
