A true legend of British television, Elizabeth Kelly, has passed away at the remarkable age of 104. Her journey as an actor is an inspiring tale of perseverance and late-blooming talent.
Born Elizabeth Trower in 1921, she didn't step into the spotlight until she was 50 years old, when she landed her first major TV role in Coronation Street. But this was just the beginning of a remarkable four-decade career that would see her become a household name.
Kelly's most iconic role was that of Nellie Ellis in EastEnders, where she played the aunt of the beloved Pauline Fowler. Over 130 episodes, she brought warmth and humor to Albert Square, becoming a favorite among fans. Her other notable appearances include Grange Hill, Emmerdale, Heartbeat, and The Bill, showcasing her versatility as an actor.
But here's where it gets controversial: despite her late start, Kelly's career spanned an impressive four decades, including a big-screen role alongside Steve Coogan in the indie hit 24 Hour Party People.
After retiring from acting in 2007, she spent her golden years with her family in North Yorkshire. It's reported that she passed away on Christmas Day, with a funeral service scheduled for February 17 at St Peter's Church in Scarborough.
Father Eddie Gubbins, who visited Kelly in nearby care homes to administer holy communion, described her as "a very strong lady with a beautiful voice." He added that she had a peaceful death, and that she was "a beautiful and gracious woman."
So, what do you think? Is Kelly's story an inspiration or a reminder of the industry's ageism? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
