Lorenzo Musetti's stunning semi-final victory in Hong Kong not only secured his spot in the final but also marked a monumental leap into the Top 5 of the world rankings! This is a huge achievement for the young Italian, and a testament to his hard work and dedication.
On Saturday, Musetti, the top seed at the Bank of China Hong Kong Tennis Open, showcased remarkable resilience. He battled past former champion Andrey Rublev in a thrilling match that ended with scores of 6-7(3), 7-5, 6-4. This win propelled him into his ninth ATP Tour final, a significant milestone in his career.
But here's where it gets exciting: this victory also guarantees Musetti a career-high ranking of No. 5 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings! He's set to officially break into the Top 5 on Monday, a feat that's been a long time coming.
Musetti himself was clearly thrilled, stating, "It was quite a match, I think I’ve never played like this here in Hong Kong. It was a really incredible level. Every time I was raising his level, and in the end, I increased [mine]. So I’m really happy to be in the final." This match also leveled his Lexus ATP Head2Head series with Rublev at 1-1, adding another layer of intrigue to their rivalry.
In the final, Musetti will face either second seed Alexander Bublik or Marcos Giron. And that's not all! The 23-year-old Musetti is also in the doubles final, partnering with his compatriot Lorenzo Sonego.
A pivotal moment in the semi-final against Rublev occurred when Musetti was serving at 3-4 in the second set. He managed to save two crucial break points during a lengthy service hold, according to Infosys ATP Stats. This hold, which included six Deuces, kept him in the game and ultimately shifted the momentum in his favor.
This achievement places Musetti among elite company. He's only the third Italian player in history to reach the Top 5 in the PIF ATP Rankings, following in the footsteps of Adriano Panatta (1976) and Jannik Sinner (2024).
