Toronto's New Traffic Czar: A Fresh Approach to Congestion Management
Toronto is set to welcome a new leader in its battle against traffic congestion in 2026. Andrew Posluns has been appointed as the city's 'traffic czar', a position created by the city council earlier this year. This strategic move aims to tackle the persistent issue of congestion, which has been a major concern for residents and a significant drain on the local economy.
The city's infrastructure services deputy manager, Will Johnston, emphasized Posluns' collaborative role, stating, 'Andrew will lead the city's congestion management efforts by working across divisions and agencies, as well as with industry and government partners, to develop innovative strategies.' Posluns will oversee the Congestion Management Plan and lead the Strategic Capital Coordination Office to reduce construction impacts on traffic.
Posluns' expertise includes a seven-year tenure at the Ministry of Transportation and over four years at Metrolinx, most recently as the senior director of corporate planning, policy, and research at the Canada Infrastructure Bank. His appointment follows a competitive recruitment process, indicating the city's commitment to finding the right leader for this challenging task.
The economic impact of congestion is substantial, estimated at around $10 billion annually in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area, according to a recent study. This highlights the urgency of the situation and the need for effective solutions.
The issue has also attracted attention from celebrities and athletes, who have publicly complained about Toronto's traffic. Some have even opted to walk or cycle to avoid the delays, showcasing the personal frustration caused by congestion.
However, concerns remain about the future of traffic management. With stricter in-office mandates for workers and the upcoming FIFA World Cup, experts predict potential worsening gridlock. Mayor Olivia Chow acknowledges the progress made but emphasizes the need for further efforts to address the city's congestion challenges.
