Ocean State Media, the powerhouse behind the renowned Public News/Talk 'The Public's Radio' and Rhode Island PBS, has announced a significant acquisition. They are buying the sports station 103.7 WVEI-FM, a simulcast of Boston's 93.7 WEEI-FM, from Audacy.
This strategic move will enable Ocean State Media to simplify its broadcasting landscape in Rhode Island. Currently, listeners have to navigate a maze of frequencies to stay tuned to Ocean State Media's programming as they travel within the state and even into southeastern Massachusetts. But with this acquisition, the media group aims to consolidate its presence onto a single, powerful frequency.
Here's the intriguing part: the transition from five frequencies to one will be a substantial investment of $4.9 million, financed over time. This decision is a bold statement, as it will provide a clearer and more consistent listening experience for audiences. As Pam Johnston, President/CEO, eloquently stated, '...advancing our commitment to delivering distinctly local news and information more effectively and efficiently across the region.'
And this is where it gets even more interesting. WVEI-FM was Audacy's sole station in the Providence market. So, this acquisition not only strengthens Ocean State Media's position but also raises questions about Audacy's future strategy in the region.
