Local surfers shine at Phillip Island Pro, showcasing talent and determination
The Phillip Island Pro Qualifying Series (QS) 4000 event at Cape Woolamai was a thrilling showcase of local surfing talent, with several Australian surfers making their mark in the final rounds.
One standout performer was Sophie Wilkinson from the Mornington Peninsula, who reached the Women's Round of 32, securing 25th place in the QS 4000. Her performance was a testament to her skill and determination, as she navigated the challenging waves with grace.
In the men's category, Joe Van Djik from Phillip Island also made it through three rounds, reaching the Round of 32. However, he faced a tough opponent in Xavier Huxtable from Torquay, who ultimately eliminated him. The Indonesian surfer, Dylan Wilcoxen, also made it to the Round of 32, showcasing the competitive nature of the event.
The event's highlight was the victory of Lucy Darragh (AUS) and Alister Reginato (AUS), who dominated the competition in a three-to-five-foot swell. Darragh, a 15-year-old from the South Coast of NSW, had an exceptional season, winning her third major QS victory and the Australia/Oceania QS title for 2025/2026.
Darragh's success was a result of her relentless fighting spirit and strategic approach. She described her heat as a battle for survival, mentioning her plan to navigate the rip bowl and her eventual triumph.
Alister Reginato, a 25-year-old from the Sunshine Coast, secured his second QS victory and the biggest win of his career. His powerful surfing and a lofty air reverse in the semi-final earned him the top spot. Reginato expressed his excitement about returning to the Challenger Series and joining his surfing buddies.
The event also saw some shifts in the rankings, with Reef Heazlewood (AUS) retaining the regional title, and Lennix Smith (AUS) and Caleb Tancred (AUS) securing second and third places, respectively. Harley Walters (AUS) moved up to the No. 4 position, displacing Dane Henry (AUS).
The 2026 Phillip Island Pro QS 4000 and Pro Junior series, supported by Visit Victoria and Bass Coast Shire, was a resounding success, attracting surfers from across the Asia and Australia/Oceania regions. The event's final day solidified the Challenger Series qualifiers and provided a stepping stone for aspiring surfers towards the Championship Tour.
