Arctic air brings a chilling twist to UK weather: Snow and ice warnings issued
After a relentless spell of wet and gloomy weather, the UK is bracing for a wintry surprise. Arctic air is set to sweep across the country, bringing a dramatic drop in temperatures and a blanket of snow and ice. Many areas will see temperatures plunge as much as six degrees below the average, creating a frosty and potentially hazardous situation.
The Met Office has issued yellow warnings for snow and ice across Scotland and northern England, valid from 16:00 GMT on Thursday to 12:00 on Friday. This means that rain will initially fall as snow over higher ground, gradually descending to lower levels throughout Thursday night. Settling snow is expected to be most prevalent above 200m, with potential accumulations of up to 10cm.
The rain and snow are forecast to clear southern regions during the early hours of Friday, but the aftermath will be a chilling one. Temperatures are predicted to drop to around 3 to 6C below the average, leading to icy conditions on untreated surfaces and dangerous road conditions in some areas. Residents and commuters are advised to take extra precautions to stay safe during this period of wintry weather.
