A massive sinkhole, a popular sporting ground, and a $26 billion project – what could possibly go wrong? Earlier this year, Melbourne was shaken by the unexpected appearance of an 8-meter-deep sinkhole at AJ Burkitt Oval in Heidelberg, a beloved sporting ground. The cause? A pressure test conducted by workers involved in the North East Link tunnel project, one of Victoria's largest infrastructure endeavors. This test, unfortunately, destabilized the ground, leading to the dramatic collapse that captured the attention of locals and authorities alike.
Police and council workers quickly cordoned off the area as curious onlookers gathered to witness the aftermath. But here's where it gets controversial...
According to authorities, the pressure test, performed by North East Link tunnel workers, was the direct cause of the sinkhole. Paul Roth, Interim CEO of VIDA Roads, the government body overseeing projects like the North East Link, stated that the test “should not have taken place.” He expressed deep disappointment and acknowledged the community's frustration following the incident.
Despite the setback, Mr. Roth assured the public that the incident wouldn't cause any delays or increase the project's $26 billion budget. The ABC reported that the workers were operating in geologically complex and fragmented ground.
And this is the part most people miss...
Mr. Roth further explained that the challenging ground conditions were known, and the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) was performing as expected. The crew proceeded through the complex area as planned before conducting the fateful pressure test. This test, as authorities now agree, should never have been carried out.
Currently, the government is working to repair the oval by filling the sinkhole with concrete. The plan is to re-turf the affected area, with completion expected by March. WorkSafe continues to monitor the situation.
